Drug abuse is not a victimless crime. Children who live in the areas where illicit drugs are being manufactured, used, and sold are often exposed to a number of highly toxic substances and chemicals. This puts them at high risk for developing serious short- and long-term health problems. In response to this growing crisis, counties are working to develop coordinated responses to remove children from these very dangerous environments. The result is the Drug Endangered Children (DEC) protocols, which unites local law enforcement agencies, county welfare units, health departments and District Attorney’s Offices together to proactively investigate and prosecute violators.
